Around Town│A Summer Preview
by Vivien Chrisholm, Staff Writer
The downtown gardens have started to bloom and summer seems right around the corner. If you’ve walked along Camelia Row lately, you’ve seen it: the window boxes coming back, the café chairs returning to the sidewalks, late afternoon light that tinges a humble parking meter into a romantic portraiture of a summer sunset. Magnolia Heights does summer well.
Here’s what to look forward to in the coming weeks.
Palermo’s Gets Seasonal
Sal Ferrero over at Palermo’s Original Pasta on Town Mill has been teasing his summer menu for about a month now, and the wait is almost over. Starting June 7th, Palermo’s will be rolling out their warm-weather specials, including what Sal is calling a lemon ricotta gnocchi with local oil that he’s been “perfecting since February.” His words! And we certainly believe him here at the Magnolia Observer.
The Fox Theater Announces Its Summer Series
The Fox Theater’s summer programming schedule drops next Friday, and early word for the box office is that this year’s lineup leans heavily into classic film and live music. If last summer’s outdoor Jazz on the Steps event is any indication, the lawn chairs will be out early. The Fox remains one of the few places in the country where you can watch a 1940s picture under real stars, which is a sentence we never get tired of writing.
Regular readers of this paper will recognize the Fox as the beating heart behind the theater in our ongoing serialized mystery, Death Wears a Jade Mask. If you’ve ever stood in the Fox’s lobby under those art deco chandeliers, you understand exactly why a fundraiser with a nose for trouble might call it home. The Fox of our town and the Fox of the story share the same particular magic. Something important is always about to happen just offstage.
If you haven’t been following along, now is the time to catch up. The latest chapter has just dropped, and the story is moving fast. The final chapters are coming, the killer is cornered, and this paper can promise you the ending is not what you expect.
